Make a 9v Coax Connector

  By Michael Simpson

This is just a quick application note to show how to make a nice 9v battery to coax connector.   It has some added stain relief so it should last a while before replacement.

You will need the following:
  • 2.1 coax connector

  • 1/8" Black Heat shrink 7/8" long

  • 1/16" Red Heat shrink 7/8" long

  • 9v Battery Clip

Kronos Robotics sells a kit of all the components needed.

Step 1

Insert the coax cover as shown over both leads.

Insert the 1/8" black heat shrink over both leads.

Insert the 1/16" red heat shrink over red lead.

Step 2

Insert the black lead into the hole on the outside connector as shown.  Insert if from the inside.

Tip:

Place the lead through the hole then hold the black lead in place by bending the small tabs on the connector.

It is important that the solder on the lead be as smooth as possible.  If it sticks out too far the coax cover will not fit.

Step 3

Insert the Red battery clip lead into the hole one the center connector as shown.  Solder in place.

Make the solder connection as smooth as possible.

Step 4

After the connection cools slide the red heat shrink over the connection as shown.

Heat the Skrink.

Step 5

The black lead will appear longer than the red.  Twist the black over the red as shown.

Step 6

Slide the black heat shrink as far as it will go.  Twist it a bit to help slide.

Heat the shrink.

Step 7

Slide the coax cover up and screw it on to the main connector.  You may have to work it a bit.
